Dental Check-up
Checking your teeth for tooth decay is just one part of a thorough dental examination. During your check-up appointment, your dentist (or dental hygienist) will likely evaluate the health of your gums, perform a head and neck examination (to look for anything out of the ordinary) and examine your mouth for any indications of oral cancer, diabetes or vitamin deficiencies. Don’t be surprised if your dentist also examines your face, bite, saliva and movement of your lower jaw joints (TMJs). Your dentist or dental hygienist will then clean your teeth and stress the importance of you maintaining good oral hygiene at home between visits.
Many dentists will pay special attention to plaque and tartar. This is because plaque and tartar can build up in a very short time if good oral hygiene is not practiced between visits. Food, beverages and tobacco can stain teeth as well. If not removed, soft plaque can harden on the teeth and irritate the gum tissue. If not treated, plaque can lead to gum disease.
During your regularly scheduled dental appointments, your dentist will likely look at your gums, mouth, tongue and throat. There are several routine parts to a dental examination.

Scaling & Polishing
A scale and polish is a very common dental treatment which is carried out as a form of oral preventative medicine. In other words, it is designed to form part of a dental hygiene plan with the aim of keeping your teeth clean and healthy.
This procedure is also known as ‘dental cleaning’ and along with tooth brushing, flossing, mouthwashes and healthy eating can help to reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Fillings
Fillings are used to restore a tooth when we have had to remove an area of decay. Traditionally, grey metal amalgam fillings have been used, largely because there were very few other materials which gave good, long-lasting results.
But, thanks to modern dental technology, we can provide tooth-coloured fillings that look and feel natural, and are very long-lasting. These have been available for many years, but often patients are not given the option of these.
The advantages are that they have little if any impact on your smile. Unlike amalgam fillings, they are also mercury-free.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury.
Why is root canal treatment needed? If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth. This may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out. Does it hurt? No. A local anaesthesia is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done.

Extractions
We understand that having a tooth removed can be an upsetting and anxious time, and, if possible, we’ll always try and help you save your tooth, but if a removal is needed, we will do everything possible to make it as comfortable and simple for you as possible.
If you are feeling particularly nervous, you may also choose to have your treatment performed under sedation or to use one of the other options available to our nervous patients.
We will always make sure that the area is completely numb before removing any tooth, and if need be we have a great team of specialist for more complicated cases including wisdom teeth removal.

Minor Oral Surgery
Sometimes there may not be room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth and, as they start to come through, they push against the teeth already there or may start to come through at an angle. When this happens, you might feel some pain or discomfort, so the best thing to do is to visit your dentist. The dentist will probably take an x-ray of your mouth to see how - or if - your wisdom teeth are coming through. From this, they will be able to make a judgement on whether or not to take them out or how best to look after you. Should you need to have a wisdom tooth taken out we have a great team of specialist oral surgeons who can care for you, and all your treatment can be carried out under sedation should you wish. Having a tooth out is the same as having an operation and, because of this, you must look after the area to speed healing and to reduce the risk of infection.
COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Dentures
Dentures are removable false teeth made of acrylic (plastic) or metal. They fit snugly over the gums to replace missing teeth and eliminate potential problems caused by gaps.
Complete dentures are used to replace missing teeth for people with no remaining teeth. Dentures may also be used for people who have lost several teeth. It is very important to replace missing teeth.
The ill effects of not doing so can be a shift in remaining teeth, an inability to bite and chew properly, as well as a sagging facial appearance, which makes one appear older than they are.

Crowns & Bridges
Both crowns and most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, which you can take out and clean daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist.
A crown is used to entirely cover or "cap" a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.

Whitening
Teeth can often become stained by regularly drinking tea, coffee, or red wine, or by smoking. They also naturally become darker with age. Our teeth whitening treatments help to remove any stains and noticeably lighten your teeth.
Teeth Whitening is one of our most popular treatments, and with good reason. It is a fast and affordable way of enhancing your smile, making your teeth lighter and brighter, and often making you look years younger too.

DENTAL EMERGENCY
Dental trauma
Dental trauma is injury to the mouth, including teeth, lip, gums, tongue and jawbones. The most common dental trauma is a broken or lost tooth. Dental trauma may be inflicted in a number of ways: contact sports, motor vehicle accidents, fights, falls, eating hard foods, drinking hot liquids and other such mishaps.
As oral tissue are highly sensitive, injuries to the mouth are typically very painful. Dental trauma should receive prompt treatment from a dentist.
